Dr. Aarti Avinash Kinikar stands as a distinguished figure in the realm of paediatrics, with a career spanning over three decades dedicated to clinical practice, education, and pioneering research. As the Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics at B.J. Government Medical College (BJGMC) in Pune, she has been instrumental in advancing paediatric healthcare in India.
Her academic journey is marked by a profound commitment to paediatric infectious diseases, haematology, and neonatology. Dr. Kinikar's innovative spirit is exemplified by her development of a cost-effective nasal bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. Ingeniously crafted from a saline bottle, an IV set, and a paediatric nasal cannula, this device has functioned as a mini ventilator, saving numerous lives during health crises such as the H1N1 pandemic and the COVID-19 outbreak. This groundbreaking invention earned her the Suchintan Trophy from the B.J. Medical College Research Society and an Indian patent, underscoring its significance in paediatric care.
In recognition of her exceptional teaching acumen, Dr. Kinikar was honoured with the Dr. Sharadini Dahanukar Best Medical Teacher Award by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. Her scholarly contributions include over 90 research publications in esteemed national and international journals, reflecting her role as a thought leader in paediatric medicine. As a Fogarty Scholar from Johns Hopkins University, USA, she has led numerous clinical paediatric research trials in collaboration with international networks across the USA, UK, South Africa, and Thailand over the past two decades.
Dr. Kinikar’s leadership extends beyond academia into public health initiatives. As a member of the Pune Task Force for COVID-19, she was instrumental in formulating paediatric and neonatal COVID-19 management guidelines, ensuring that the youngest patients received appropriate care during the pandemic. Her role as Nodal Officer for COVID-19 at BJGMC further highlights her dedication to combating the pandemic on the front lines.
Her professional affiliations are extensive, including life membership in the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) and the National Neonatology Forum (NNF). She also serves as a national trainer for various Government of India health programmes, contributing to the enhancement of paediatric healthcare services nationwide.
