Dr. Debjyoti Chakraborty

Principal Scientist. IGIB (Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology), New Delhi

Dr. Debojyoti Chakraborty is a distinguished Principal Scientist at the CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB) in New Delhi, where he leads the RNA Biology Lab. His academic journey commenced with a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology from the West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata, followed by a PhD from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, under the mentorship of Frank Buchholz. Subsequent to a postdoctoral tenure at the Medical Faculty of TU Dresden, Dr. Chakraborty returned to India to establish his own laboratory at IGIB.

Dr. Chakraborty's research is at the forefront of CRISPR technology, focusing on its application in therapeutic gene targeting and the development of innovative genome editing platforms. His work encompasses the creation of precise genome editing agents for therapeutic purposes, the systematic elucidation of nucleic acid interrogation properties of genome editing proteins, and the establishment of disease-specific induced pluripotent stem cell repositories for monogenic diseases prevalent in the Indian population.

Under his leadership, the RNA Biology Lab has made significant strides in advancing organoid research through CRISPR-engineered forebrain assembloids on nanofibre platforms. This innovative approach has provided valuable insights into neuronal migration kinetics, offering potential avenues for therapeutic interventions in neurological disorders.

Dr. Chakraborty's contributions to the scientific community have been recognised through several prestigious accolades. In 2020, he was honoured with the CSIR Young Scientist Award and was selected as one of the 30 EMBO Young Investigators, reflecting his exceptional contributions to molecular biology and genetics.

Beyond his scientific endeavours, Dr. Chakraborty is an accomplished sitarist, having performed extensively both in India and internationally. This unique blend of scientific acumen and artistic talent underscores his multifaceted persona, contributing to his holistic approach to research and innovation.

Dr. Chakraborty’s dedication to advancing genome editing technologies and their therapeutic applications positions him as a leading figure in the field, with his work continuing to inspire and drive progress in molecular biology and genetic research.
